Case Study: Human-centered AI
Generative AI for Advancing Equity in Education
Conceived and led a human-centered GenAI solution for K-12 and higher education that accelerates teacher productivity and student support while preserving privacy, integrity, and equity.
The Challenge
Post-pandemic learning loss and teacher shortages created urgent demand for innovative approaches to learning and support
As the latest development in generative AI has captured the attention and imagination of organizations and consumers alike, AI in schools must also address data privacy, content integrity, learning equity, and student diversity.
Project Objective
Launch a functional, workflow-driven GenAI proof-of-concept
Business Impact
Improve instructional capacity and student achievement
User Value
Teachers saves time; Students get personalized support.
My Role & Approach
We took on an innovation sprint approach, bringing together a cross-functional team to rapidly explore and experiment with a technology that was very new at the time. I collaborated closely with my AI/ML counterpart to shape an educator suite and a student suite to drive value on both sides of the classroom.
1
Product & Experience Lead
Partnered with senior AI/ML specialist to ideate and define the core product features. Led design across educator and student experiences
2
Team Composition
Myself as the Product/UX lead, 1 solution architect, 1 designer, 1 data/ML specialist, 3–4 engineers; Partnered with AWS for enterprise-grade architecture.
3
Key Constraints
Strict PII protection and district policy alignment.
Integration with SIS/LMS and curriculum
Products must work for all tech-fluency levels.
Moving Past the Open-ended Chat Bot

We believe that technology should address real human problems and improve the human experience.
We moved past the chat bot to democratize AI-support by centering around the way teachers and students think and work. This ensures equal access to all, regardless of tech savviness or experience.
By leveraging AWS Bedrock to maintain data privacy and content integrity, the platform can integrate with district guidelines to support learning equity and student diversity.
Our discovery and define phase began with a deep dive into district curriculum and understanding how teachers and students work to ideate a list of relevant use cases.
With 3 children in the public school system myself, I was able to draw from my own personal experience.
We ideated on potential features, validated feasibility on AI content generation with Claude, and created mid-fidelity prototypes to rapidly validate concepts and refine ideas.
Instructional Support for Educators
Instructor Dashboard with insights on student engagement and performance, recommended content, and reusable assets.
Customizable apps accelerate and support planning and teaching.
Lesson Plan Assistant creates day-by-day plans aligned to curriculum and classroom demographics; sources are explorable and teacher feedback improves quality.
IEP (Individualized Education Plan) Helper suggests goals and objectives based on assessment input and trained on prior IEP data. Educator can review, edit, and finalize.
"Study Buddy" for Students
Key Concepts highlights themes that are important to be familiar with, and common challenges/mistakes based on data insights.
Topic selection is ingested from course syllabus, which is based on the individual student's registered courses.
Study Plans support independent study or study groups.
Students can personalized by mastery, learning style, and duration.
Notification can be set to send reminders for daily focus.
Practice Problems help students study and prepare for their next exam.
Students can specify format, length, and subject mastery for a specific topic.
Instant answer reveal allow students to self-check against their performance.
Outcomes & Impact
01
Equity-minded Design
A human‑centered interface reduce prompt‑engineering burden and support equitable access of diverse learners and educators at any level of tech savviness.
02
Elevated Market Exposure
Invited by AWS to showcase our solution at education conferences, expanding visibility and engagement with superintendents and administrators.
03
Reusable, Live Demo Assets
Delivered a live app with wired APIs plus enablement assets (demo deck, script, and links) to accelerate reuse by sales and BD across the firm
04
Secure, Responsible, GenAI Architecture
Demonstrated an enterprise‑grade, in‑tenant approach that keeps district data secure while enabling responsible GenAI use cases like lesson planning and IEP preparation.
Key Takeaways
Educators responded positively to the demo—especially the way it can spin a single lesson plan into differentiated variants tuned to a class’s real mix of learners (mastery level, cultural relevance, etc). By making high-quality differentiation fast and repeatable, teachers can teach to all levels—not just the lowest common denominator—while staying in the loop to review and refine. This puts equity into practice: every student gets appropriately challenging material and support, raising the floor without lowering the ceiling.
